I tossed and turned all night long. My Bible rested against my chest. I prayed for Pepe Jackson’s mother and for my family too. When I turned my head to look at the alarm clock, it was already 6:30 AM. We had to go over to the courtroom in a group, so I hurried to shower and put on my clothes—a white, button-down shirt and gray slacks—so the others didn’t have to wait. A shuttle bus took us to the courtroom. On our way there, I saw crowds of people outside that were growing by the day. Media from all over were there, and so were numerous police vehicles. We all sat silent with scores of thoughts swarming in our heads. None of which we could speak about, but they sure as hell were raging. We had to get this right or these people were going to be pissed. The world was watching, and with Pepe Jackson being black, and Pussy Anderson being white, it brought race to the forefront, even though it had nothing to do with this case.

Court resumed. Mr. Caldwell attempted to go out with a bang. One of Pussy’s long-time friends was on the stand, testifying for the prosecution. According to Miss Stevenson, the witness, Pussy spoke ill about black men and she was only with Pepe for his money. Go figure. Their friendship fell apart because Pussy Anderson displayed hatred toward African Americans. Miss Stevenson recalled a time when she was caught in the middle of one of Pussy’s many episodes.

“We were on our way to go shopping. Right before we got there, Pussy pulled her car next to a black man who was driving a Mercedes. Next to the man was a white woman. They appeared to be indulged in a conversation, but when she saw the two of them kiss, she started saying inappropriate things that caused an argument between us.”

“Do you mind being specific, Miss Stevenson?”

“Well, things like dumb negro, stupid jerk and wannabe niggers. She even referred to the woman as a money-hungry whore. Things of that nature.”

“Then what happened?”

“As we argued, she drove her car in front of the man, trying to cut him off on purpose. When the man blew his horn, she lifted her middle finger and waved it out of the window. The man drove by shaking his head. That’s when she called him a stupid fuck. After that, the man reached for a gun and aimed it at us. My heart started to beat fast, because I thought he was going to kill us. He used the gun to scare us. Then he sped off. I asked her why she was upset, especially since she had dated black men before. She told me that all they were good for was money. And for the ones who wanted a piece of her goodies, they’d have to pay big time for it. That’s the only way she could see herself with them.”

“Have you seen her since that day?”

“No. No, I haven’t.
